School Excursion at the Wollongong Botanic Garden

 

Green Connect Farm is thrilled to be partnering with the Wollongong Botanic Garden to deliver Primary School Excursions for S1 – S3 for Science and Technology, and Geography.

Overview: Understand the world of living things in a ‘my first excursion’ experience full of games, stories and nature play

Students will:

  • Collect loose parts to make a mandala from living and non-living materials
  • Go on a discovery walk to identify the types of living things at the Botanic Garden (plants and animals)
  • Make a living thing using natural materials that has characteristics and needs of a living thing

Curriculum links:

  • STe-3LW-ST explores the characteristics, needs and uses of living things
  • STe- 1WS- S observes, questions and collects date to communicate ideas

Overview: Birds, mammals, reptiles, minibeasts and some amazing plant life reside here in the Wollongong Botanic Garden. Visit different environments and explore the nature that lives there.

Students will:

  • Visit the rainforest and undertake minibeast sampling to collect data on living things in the understory
  • Use dipnets to sample the wet environment creek line for macro invertebrates
  • Identify bird species and its matching habitat through a bird bingo walk
  • Make some eco art describing observable features of the botanic garden and its flora and fauna

  • ST1-11LW: describes ways that different places in the environment provide for the needs of living things
  • GE1-1: describes features of places and the connections people have with places
  • ST1 – 4lWS: Describes observable features of living things and their environments

Overview: Through storytelling, guided walks and hands on activities this session introduces and explores the Garden’s habitats and its inhabitants.

Students will:

  • Make a mud map of a key area of the Garden highlighting its ecology and its human interactions
  • Undertake a rainforest mini beast hunt and a creekline dipnet to collect data
  • Visit two contrasting habitats and describe the features of these places and the connection people have with these places

Curriculum links:

  • ST2-DAT-01: Uses and interprets data to describe patterns and relationships
  • HS2-GEO-01: Explains how people care for Australia’s environments and participate in in Australian society using geographical information

Overview: Visit three distinct living worlds situated in the Botanic Garden and undertake field work to gain an understanding of how these environments affect the growth of living things.

Students will:

  • Identify flora and fauna species
  • Visit three different habitats, undertake field sketches and field work testing to identify key differences in each place
  • Record and collect data based on personal predictions before visiting habitats
  • Present data and early conclusions in a group presentation

Curriculum links:

  • ST3-4LW-S examines how the environment affects the growth, survival and adaptation of living things
  • ST3-1WS-S plans and conducts scientific investigations to answer testable questions, and collects and summarises data to communicate conclusions
  • ST3- DAT -01
  • ACSIS231, ACSIS232 make and justify predictions about scientific investigations

BOOKING INFORMATION

  • Group Size:
    • Minimum group size: 25 students
    • Maximum group size: 120 students
  • Cost and payments
    • In term 2 2025, excursion costs are $14.50 per student for a 2.5-hour experience. Accompanying adults are free. From term 3 onwards, excursion costs will go up to $20 per student.
    • To secure your booking date, we will invoice you the minimum group size (25 students)
    • After your excursion, we will invoice you the balance for all students over 25 who attended.
  • Excursion cancellations and weather
    • Excursions are run entirely outdoors. Most programs can still go ahead in light rain. Please make sure students, teachers and accompanying parents wear appropriate wet weather clothes and shoes.
    • Excursions may need to be cancelled or postponed in heavy rain, storms or high winds.
