Rain Rain Rain!

Life has been a real challenge down here at the farm. The downpour conditions are preventing us from preparing and planting garden beds, for fear that our seedlings and precious topsoil will wash away. And when soil is waterlogged for a significant time, roots become deprived of much needed oxygen and get damaged, and our crops become increasingly susceptible to fungal issues.

Please bear with us over these very wet weeks. We will be doing our very best not to make too many changes to the planned contents of your veg boxes… but the elements are against us. We will likely rely on our organic suppliers more over the next few weeks too. But we’re excited to see how well our veggies and grow once these extreme conditions have passed!

On a positive note, pulling weeds has become a lot easier, so it’s been very satisfying to hand weed around our rows of beautiful eggplants. And although most of the animals are quite unimpressed with the muddy conditions, the piglets are happily wallowing and the ducks are dabbling with great enthusiasm!

Enjoy,

Did you know?

Perilla (Perilla frutescens) is a member of the mint family and looks a bit like purple basil with toothed, heart-shaped leaves. The leaves taste slightly minty with a unique bitter flavour too. Known as shiso in Asia, it’s used to flavour and colour many dishes. Try using it as a mint substitute with cut-up fruit or lemonade. Or use it as a stand-in for red lettuce in mixed salad, as a topper on pizza or in an open-faced omelette.
