What to Expect in your Veg Box this Spring (2023)

Spring has certainly arrived early this year! Our garden beds are in full production and the farm feels beautiful and bountiful, although we do have six kid goats determined to break our and sample the fare as much as possible. Read on to find out what you can expect to see in Green Connect veg boxes this season.

Emily Henderson (Green Connect Farm Manager)

Seasonal Flowering Veg

Broccoli, Broccolini, Cauliflower, Green & Red Cabbage, Snow Pea, Broadbean, Zucchini, Cucumber, Yellow Squash, Eggplant, Capsicum, Pumpkin, Avocado

Broccolini, cauliflower, cabbage, snow peas and pumpkin will continue into spring. Broad beans and green beans will feature later in the season, and given the weather, we may get some early harvests of some of our summer favourites, such as zucchini, cucumber, eggplant and capsicum.

 Leafy Greens

Lettuce (cos, red oak, green oak), Silverbeet, Rainbow Chard, Kale (curly leaf), Joi Choi, Bok Choy, English Spinach, Salad Mix, Radicchio, Rocket, Mizuna, Fennel, Celery, Red Amaranth

Our silverbeet and rainbow chard are going strong, along with oak and cos lettuces and curly leaf kale. We have further plantings of bok choy, joi choi, celery, rocket, mizuna, and fennel planned and there will also be a couple of red amaranth harvests to look forward to. After a slow start, we are hoping to see our radicchio take off too! We have been delighted with our English spinach plantings over winter, so expect to see some more of these beautiful leafy greens in your boxes soon.

Roots & Alliums

Carrot, beetroot, radish, leek, spring onion, turnip, kohlrabi, sweet potato, potato, onion (red & brown)

Carrot, beetroot, leek, and spring onion will continue to shine in our spring veg boxes. We should get more of winter favourites kohlrabi, turnip, and radish in the next couple of months. We’ll keep sourcing organic potatoes and onions as box staples too (incorporating red onion into your boxes more often for some extra variety).

Herbs

Basil, Parsley, Coriander, Dill, Rosemary, Bay Leaf, Mint, Water Celery, Chilli

As usual, herbs will supplement your veg boxes this spring. You’ll see the usual favourites like coriander, parsley and basil, along with more water celery, which is still thriving at the farm. We have a trial crop of ‘dagger chilli’ planned for planting this spring, which will be very interesting!

Fruit

Apple, Pears Banana, Orange, Mandarin, Lemon, Kiwifruit, Passionfruit, Tamarillo, Guava, Babaco, Mulberries

Sourced from other certified organic suppliers, bananas and apples will continue to feature in mixed boxes, with pear, citrus and kiwifruit rotated in as well. We also strive to pack as much of fruit from our own trees as possible, particularly in larger boxes and fruit-only boxes, so expect to see mulberries, passionfruit, and lemons, as well as hopefully some yellow cherry guavas, tamarillos, and babacos.
