What to Expect in your Veg Box this Winter (2023)

We are excited to start harvesting this winter! After a major push and lots of hard work to reclaim some overgrown garden beds, we have many crops in the ground for harvest from July onwards. We have also subscribed to a great software package for small organic farms. It will allow us to better monitor and predict yields for our crops, as well as make sure no important tasks around the farm are overlooked!

Seasonal Flowering Veg

Broccoli, Broccolini, Cauliflower, Green & Red Cabbage, Snow Pea, Sugar Snap Pea, Broadbean, Cucumber, Pumpkin

Brassicas are the stars of winter and we have lots of broccolini, broccoli, cauliflower, and red and green cabbage already in the ground. Although they present challenges with pests, there is nothing quite so satisfying as spotting the hidden heads of these veg amongst the leaves! After a disappointing run with peas last year, we aim to make a big comeback this year with large plantings of snow pea and sugar snap.

 Leafy Greens

Lettuce (cos, red oak, green oak), Silverbeet, Rainbow Chard, Kale (green curly leaf), Joi Choy, Bok Choy, Salad Mix, Rocket, Mizuna, Red Elk, Sweet Potato Leaf, English Spinach, Fennel, Snow Pea Shoots

Silverbeet, rainbow chard, lettuce and kale will continue to be veg box staples. We will also be growing bok choy, joi choi, English spinach, rocket, radicchio, and fennel,  along with pea shoots and sweet potato leaf for some extra variety.

Roots & Alliums

Carrot, beetroot (golden and purple), radish, pumpkin, leek, spring onion, onions, turnip, swede, kohlrabi, Jerusalem artichoke, sweet potato, potato, onion

Carrot, beetroot (red and golden), leek and spring onion are favourites here at the Green Connect farm. We also have kohlrabi, turnip, parsnip, radish (cherry and daikon), and swede planned for this winter. Of course, we’ll keep sourcing organic potatoes and onions to complete your slow-cooked winter meals and stews, with plans to start rotating in red onion and sweet potato more regularly.

Herbs

Parsley, Coriander, Dill, Rosemary, Bay Leaf, Water Celery

We will continue to grow herbs around the farm to supplement veg boxes. Coriander and parsley thrive in the cool weather! We’ll also include the occasional dill, rosemary, water celery and bay leaf.

Fruit

Apples, Pears, Bananas, Oranges, Mandarins, Lemon, Melon

For those of you who get our mixed boxes (which includes seasonal fruit), we are heading into citrus season and we will aim to include some fruit from our citrus trees! However, because we purchase much of our fruit from other certified organic suppliers, you will continue to receive a good range of quality fruit throughout the season, including apples, bananas, oranges, lemons, mandarins, and pears.
