Welcome to Winter!
We have been launched straight into some seriously wintery weather. Although we might get a little chilly while harvesting, in some respects the colder weather is a blessing; we are not stressed about veg (like lettuce) wilting as we harvest, so there is less of a panic to rush everything into the cool room!
Seasonal flowering veg: For this winter we have planted broccolini along with our favourites broccoli, cauliflower, and cabbage. I get quite excited peeking into bunches of green leaves to find a perfectly developing cauliflower head! Another source of excitement is planting one of my all-time favourites; snow peas. When I started working at Green Connect late last year, I was absolutely blown away by the delicious snow peas we harvested, and I can’t wait to taste them again.
Leafy greens: Although our latest silverbeet and rainbow chard struggled to thrive in the wet conditions, lettuce and kale have done quite well. We will keep planting these greens, as well as bok choy, joi choi, rocket, endive, and fennel.
Roots, starches & alliums: Carrot, beetroot, radish, leek, and spring onion are favourites here at the Green Connect farm and they thrive in the winter months. We also have kohlrabi, turnip, and swede in the ground, ready to shine. Of course, we’ll keep sourcing organic potatoes and onions to complete your slow-cooked winter meals and stews.
Herbs & fruit: As usual, various herbs will supplement your veg boxes this winter. Coriander has had a strong start, plus we have parsley, dill, water celery and bay leaf. For those who receive fruit, we are heading into citrus season. However, because we purchase fruit from other certified organic suppliers, we will continue to provide a good range of quality fruit throughout the season.
Enjoy!

Note: We sometimes need to make changes to what we pack in your veg box based on the quantity or quality of produce that we can harvest and source. If you have any questions about what is in your box, don’t hesitate to contact us at [email protected].
Did you know?
Yacon: Sometimes called Peruvian Ground Apple, yacon is an edible tuber that looks like a sweet potato but eats like a fruit. Its uniquely refreshing taste is a bit like apple, watermelon, and celery combined. It is delicious eaten raw, either plain, sliced in salad or juiced. It can also be cooked, either roasted on it’s own or added to a stew, soup or stir fry, where it readily absorbs other flavours. Store like you would a potato, in a cool, dry, dark place, and eat within a week or two.
