What to Expect in your Veg Box this Summer

Summer is a glorious season and brings some of our favourite veggies, including tomatoes, zucchinis, cucumbers, and eggplants. After months of wet weather, we have high hopes of turning on our irrigation systems for the first time in almost a year! We are also desperately looking forward to planting in some of the garden beds that have been waterlogged for many months and are now dry enough.

Seasonal Flowering Veg

Cherry tomato, zucchini, cucumber, eggplant, capsicum, green beans, snow peas, broccoli, cauliflower, green cabbage, pumpkin

Our favourite summer veggies, including tomato, zucchini, eggplant and cucumber, will feature strongly in veg boxes this season. We only grow cherry tomatoes because they are less susceptible to fruit fly and, all being well, these little beauties will be filling boxes until May. The first eggplants are due to start to fruit later in the summer and it is always an exciting time seeing beautiful deep purple teardrops appearing in the garden beds. Green beans (round and flat) and snow peas are growing well and we hope for some bumper harvests well into the summer. We’ll also continue to see broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, and pumpkin.

Leafy Greens

Silverbeet, rainbow chard, lettuce (oak & cos), kale (curly leaf), bok choy, joi choi, mizuna, rocket, fennel, amaranth, celery

We plan to take full advantage of the fast growing lettuce season whilst we can; so expect to see more beautiful soft leaf oak and crunchy cos lettuce in your boxes. Kale, silverbeet and rainbow chard are year-round crops at our farm. Bok choy and joi choi will make an appearance again this summer, along with  occasional Amaranth leaf, red parella and celery.

Roots & Alliums

Carrot, beetroot, leek, spring onion, kohlrabi, turnip, radish, sweet potato, potato, onion

Carrots have been planted and already doing well, with more plantings planned throughout the season. Summer is also a time that beetroots shine, with our purple beets so they should regularly feature as well.  Leeks have been growing really well so far this year, so in summer they will continue to compliment onion in boxes, along with some spring onion and fennel. As always, we will be outsourcing our potatoes and onions from other organic growers.

Herbs

Basil, parsley, dill, parella, rosemary, bay leaf, mint, lime leaf, water celery, chilli, coriander, rosemary

We will continue to grow a variety of herbs around the farm to supplement your veg boxes this summer. Basil is the king of summer, so get your Italian cookbooks out because we’ll be making the most of the season by giving you plenty of it! Parsley and dill are also summer favourites. We’ll also be packing some other conventional herbs such as coriander, rosemary, bay leaf and mint, along with some less conventional herbs like water celery and parella.

Fruit

Apple, banana, orange, mandarin, mango, pineapple, melon, plum, nectarine, passionfruit, avocado

We will continue to source the majority of our fruit from other organic growers as available through the Sydney markets, which means it’s a bit harder to predict what will be available. In summer, we can expect to see the staples of banana, apple and orange, but we will also look forward to some beautiful stone fruit in the boxes too, with mango in particular bringing us the flavour of summer!
