A New Chapter

My first veg box insert!

Green Connect Farm team

When I walk around the farm, it is hard to comprehend the effort that has gone into transforming what was once a weedy, overgrown wasteland into what we see today. I feel extremely privileged and excited to take on the Fair Food and Farm Manager role, plus completely in awe of what has been achieved by Cal, the Green Connect team and community over the previous eight years.

In my short time here, I have been made to feel very welcome by everyone in the Green Connect team. I have embarked on a steep learning curve with some of my responsibilities (the composting toilets come to mind!), but am wholeheartedly enthusiastic about what lies ahead and am very proud to have this opportunity.

It is impossible not to be inspired by the sights and scents of all the wonderful Green Connect produce, especially during harvest and packing… snow peas have been my clear favourite so far; delicious! I have also appreciated the dedication and sheer hard work involved, particularly when harvesting in challenging weather conditions.

I’m really looking forward to working with the team and continuing to provide a supportive environment for others to develop skills and employment opportunities. With the end of lockdown, it is also wonderful to be able to meet and welcome back volunteers, plus look to open up for public for tours and workshops in the near future.

Exciting times ahead and we hope to see you soon!

Did you know?

Turnip: Turnips are root vegetables that are closely related to radishes and rocket. They are healthy, easy to prepare and delicious, with both the large taproot and the leafy greens being edible. They can be eaten raw in salads pickled, boiled, grilled or sautéed. Although they can taste a little bitter raw, cooking turnips with seasoning or coupling them with some garlic is a great idea as they absorb flavour incredibly well!
