What to Expect in your Veg Box this Autumn (2023)

We are looking forward to a pleasant, cooler transition into Autumn at the farm; some relief from working in the heat and humidity! Read on to find out what to expect in your veg box throughout Autumn this year.

Seasonal Flowering Veg

Tomato, zucchini, cucumber (Lebanese), squash (yellow patty-pan and golden nugget), eggplant, beans (green, purple and butterbeans), broccoli, broccolini, cauliflower, green & red cabbage

Tomato, cucumber, eggplant and zucchini will slow down as the weather cools, although we are excitedly waiting to harvest yellow patty pan and golden nugget squash soon. Early Autumn will see more beans, followed by a steady supply of classic brassicas; we are planting broccoli, cauliflower, red and green cabbage for an ongoing supply over the coming months.

Leafy Greens

Oak lettuce, cos lettuce, silverbeet, rainbow chard, kale (green curly leaf and Tuscan), rocket, mizuna, joi choy, bok choy, amaranth leaf, sweet potato leaf, English spinach, fennel, celery

Kale, silverbeet, and rainbow chard are year-round crops at our farm. Bok choy and joi choi will continue to make an appearance, along with occasional fennel, amaranth leaf, and celery. We struggled with our young lettuce bolting to seed over the summer this year, however the lettuce and other salad greens like mizuna in the ground now are looking great!

Roots & Alliums

Carrot, beetroot (golden and purple), radish, pumpkin, leek, spring onion, onions, turnip, swede, kohlrabi, Jerusalem artichoke, sweet potato, potato, onion

As the weather cools, carrots and purple beetroot will slow, with turnip, radish and golden beetroot planting increasing. We are growing swede this year too! Leek and spring onion are growing well, plus we will aim for a Jerusalem artichoke harvest over Autumn. As always, we will outsource potatoes and onions from organic growers.

Herbs

Basil, parsley, dill, parella, rosemary, bay leaf, mint, lime leaf, water celery, coriander, lime leaf

We will continue to grow herbs around the farm to supplement veg boxes. As the weather cools, we will be getting coriander in the ground as basil phases out. We’ll also pack other common herbs such as rosemary, bay leaf and mint, along with less conventional herbs like water celery and red parella.

Fruit

Apples, Pears, Bananas, Oranges, Mandarins, Lemon, Melon

Those of you who get our mixed boxes (which includes seasonal fruit) will know that we purchase much of our fruit in from organic suppliers. So although it can be hard to predict what will be available over the next few months (for example stone fruit growers had a challenging summer this year), we aim to source the best quality organic fruit possible, with apples, bananas, oranges, mandarins, and pears featuring regularly.
