Zucchini Maniazucchini

It’s amazing the difference weather can make! The first hot spell of the season is always an anxious time. It can typically force the winter veg to ‘bolt’ to seed or get smashed by summer pests.

But the real hero this week is the Zucchini patch, which started to pump out fruit as soon as the weather turned. The only challenge Zucchinis pose through summer is picking them in time! So, our crew will have their work cut out over summer making sure we get them before they turn into starchy marrows (and our pigs will have some serious eating to do if we can’t keep up with the picking!).

This season, we are growing our favourite grey Lebanese Zucchini as well as the standard dark green Italian Zucchini’s. Both varieties cook and eat very similar. Zucchini’s are typically associated with Mediterranean cuisine – but they are actually the perfect veg to thinly slice and grate into any dish.

On a completely different note, this week will be the last time we will be putting these physical leaflets into the box. With half our customers choosing to have it emailed to them instead of the hard copy, working out who wants a leaflet and who doesn’t is creating confusion during packing and, perhaps, making things more complicated than it needs to be. We believe, however, that these leaflets are an essential part of the veg box experience, so we will start sending weekly SMSs on the day your box is delivered which will have a link to the insert on our website. The insert blog will be updated with the following week’s insert every Friday by 4pm, so this way you can check out the insert before your box has arrived!

Enjoy,

What’s that in my box: Cousin to broccoli, cauliflower and Brussels sprouts, cabbage provides a wide variety of health benefits. High in vitamin C, dietary fibre, and folate, this veg is also low in calories and very versatile in the kitchen. You can shred cabbage to make slaw or just a fresh lettuce alternative for burritos. Cabbage is a great addition to soups and curries and will work with most meals Green Connect Honey Illawarradue to its mild flavour. For more information on how to store & cook any of our vegetables, visit: https://draxe.com/ and type in the veggie you’re looking for.

Have you tried Green Connect’s honey and eggs?
We’ve had honey flying off the shelf at our office in the Unanderra op-shop and we’d love to see our honey in more boxes over the festive season. Truly delicious and lovely to know that flowers along lake heights have given it a uniquely local flavour.
As for our eggs, we are now solely producing them from our farm – Kangaroo valley’s eggs were delicious but we’re proud that our hens doing so well! A great addition to weekly meals, our eggs can make your pancakes, omelettes, fritters, or simply fried eggs that much more delicious.
